Standard Lesson Structure (45 minutes)
- Opening (5-10 min): Hook with a real scenario or question to get students thinking
- Teach (15-20 min): Present key concepts, real examples, and statistics
- Discuss (10-15 min): Use discussion prompts to engage critical thinking
- Activity (10-15 min): Interactive activity: debate, case study, role-play, or group discussion
- Wrap-up (5 min): Key takeaways and why this matters to their lives
Technical Setup
Projector for slides, students can work in groups or individually depending on activity. Internet access needed for some discussion topics (showing real examples safely).
Handling Difficult Questions
If a student discloses abuse: Stay calm, thank them for telling you, don't promise to keep it secret. Report to school counselor/admin. If students get upset: Normalize it; these are heavy topics. Validate feelings and offer counselor connection.
Mandatory Reporting
These lessons may trigger disclosures of abuse or exploitation. Know your state's mandatory reporting requirements and your school's procedures. Have counselor contact info ready.
